Plant dN Correlates with the Transpiration Efficiency of Nitrogen Acquisition in Tropical Trees

چکیده
Based upon considerations of a theoretical model of N/N fractionation during steady-state nitrate uptake from soil, we hypothesized that, for plants grown in a common soil environment, whole-plant dN (dP) should vary as a function of the transpiration efficiency of nitrogen acquisition (FN/v) and the difference between dP and root d N (dP 2 dR). We tested these hypotheses with measurements of several tropical tree and liana species. Consistent with theoretical expectations, both FN/v and dP 2 dR were significant sources of variation in dP, and the relationship between dP and FN/v differed between non-N2-fixing and N2-fixing species. We interpret the correlation between dP and FN/v as resulting from variation in mineral nitrogen efflux-to-influx ratios across plasma membranes of root cells. These results provide a simple explanation of variation in dN of terrestrial plants and have implications for understanding nitrogen cycling in ecosystems.

Leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratios of tropical trees: experimental assessment of physiological and environmental controls.
We investigated the variation in leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratios of tropical tree and liana seedlings as a function of the relative growth rate, whole-plant water-use efficiency, soil water content and fertilizer addition. First, seedlings of 13 tree and liana species were grown individually in 38-l pots prepared with a homogeneous soil mixture. Second, seedlings of three tree species were g...

Seedlings of several species of gymnosperm trees, angiosperm trees, and angiosperm lianas were grown under tropical field conditions in the Republic of Panama; physiological processes controlling plant C and water fluxes were assessed across this functionally diverse range of species. Relative growth rate, r, was primarily controlled by the ratio of leaf area to plant mass, of which specific le...
متن کاملStable nitrogen isotope patterns of trees and soils altered by long-term nitrogen and phosphorus addition to a lowland tropical rainforest
Foliar nitrogen (N) isotope ratios (dN) are used as a proxy for N-cycling processes, including the ‘‘openness’’ of the N cycle and the use of distinct N sources, but there is little experimental support for such proxies in lowland tropical forest. To address this, we examined the dN values of soluble soil N and canopy foliage of four tree species after 13 years of factorial N and P addition to ...

متن کاملAssociation of transpiration efficiency with N2 fixation of peanut under early season drought
Peanut is grown mostly in rainfed areas where drought is a recurring problem. Peanut genotypes with high transpiration efficiency (TE) use less water and produced yield better under drought conditions. Specific leaf area and SPAD chlorophyll meter reading are used as surrogate traits for TE. N2 fixation (NF) is also used as a surrogate trait for yield under drought. The objective of this study ...
